Volume: the lie detector of trading

Sep 26, 2026

Volume is the one chart signal that tells traders whether a price move is backed by real money — useful for anyone trying to avoid fake breakouts.

  • Volume is simply how much actually changed hands, so it shows whether a crowd agrees with a move or a few players are pushing a thin market around.
  • The practical test is a 20-period average of volume: bars two to three times that average mark the pivots worth trusting.
  • Big lows and blow-off tops almost always come with huge volume, while a market drifting lower on quiet volume is apathy and usually keeps falling.
  • A breakout with no extra volume is bait for stop-loss hunts; a break that comes with a surge in volume is the real thing.
  • Huge volume with barely any price movement means someone enormous is absorbing the other side, and price usually turns their way.

Bitcoin's own chart shows the pattern: the February 2026 capitulation low came on volume double the average, then price rallied hard. Crypto volume can also be faked through wash trading on low-quality exchanges, so the numbers are only trustworthy on major venues or an index.

Outlook: Bitcoin's volume has been fading through a sideways range, a setup that typically ends in one large move, and volume is now starting to pick up again as price pushes back toward the top of that range.

## Bitcoin Levels

  • **Bias:** Neutral — a maturing consolidation range that is ripe for resolution, with volume starting to expand again.
  • **Support:** $60,000 (February 2026 capitulation low, set on roughly 2x average volume)
  • **Resistance:** $83,000 (top of the post-low rally, currently being retested from around $80,000)
  • **Targets:** A close through $83,000 on expanding volume would confirm an upside break; failure there points back toward the $60,000 low.
